Medicare open enrollment happens every year between October 15 and December 7. During this time, you can review your coverage and make changes for the next year. Because plans and personal needs can change, it’s important to look at your current plan, even if you’re happy and do not plan on changing it.
We know Medicare can be tricky, so here are five helpful tips to guide you during your Medicare review.
1. Check for Changes in Your Current Plan
Premiums, co-pays and covered services and providers can change each year. You should receive an Annual Notice of Change in the mail. Review it closely and make sure your prescriptions, providers and preferred healthcare facilities are still covered.
2. Review Your Healthcare Needs
Think about your health over the last year. Were you diagnosed with a new condition? Did you start a new medication? Are you visiting specialty providers more often? Make a list of your current needs and think about what you may need in the next year. Compare this list to your current plan to make sure it still meets these needs.
3. Compare Plan Options
There are several options when it comes to Medicare: Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Prescription Drug Plans (Part D). Medicare.gov has a useful tool that compares coverage, costs and benefits, and HealthLinc’s insurance specialists can help review your needs and discuss your plan options for more personalized help. Even if you don’t switch plans, knowing your options can help you feel confident in your choice.
4. Pay Attention to Costs Other Than the Premiums
When looking at Medicare plans, don’t just focus on the monthly premium. Make sure to look at co-pays, deductibles, prescription costs and the maximum out-of-pocket expenses for each plan. A plan with a lower premium might seem nice, but it could end up costing you more if you need frequent care.
5. Get Help If You Need It
Medicare can be confusing, but you don’t have to figure it out on your own. HealthLinc has insurance specialists who are trained in Indiana’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program that can help you understand your choices and answer your questions.
