To recognize the work he’s done to get patients vaccinated against HPV and reduce their risk of HPV-related oral cancer, Dr. Isaac Zeckel, HealthLinc’s chief dental officer, was presented with the American Cancer Society’s Innovation Award.

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States. HPV can infect the throat and mouth and cause cancer at the base of the tongue and tonsils. An estimated 70% of oral cancer cases in the United States are caused by HPV. Oral HPV is commonly transmitted through oral sex and impacts roughly 10% of men and 3.6% of women.

By getting vaccinated against HPV, patients reduce their risk of catching HPV and the health problems caused by them, including oral cancer. Both men and women should get vaccinated against HPV to protect themselves and their partners against oral cancer-causing HPV and other types of HPV.
