During the pandemic, a public health emergency (PHE) was put in place as a response to COVID-19. This did a lot to help protect the health and wellness of Americans, including keeping those enrolled in Medicaid continuously covered. Starting April 1, 2023, Medicaid programs will return to reviewing their member’s eligibility. This process is known as an “unwinding” or “redetermination” period, and all Medicaid members will be affected. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to make sure you do not lose your Medicaid coverage.

Update your information.

The most important thing you can do is to make sure that your information on file with the Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) is up to date. This includes your current mailing address, phone number and email address. You can do this by logging in to your Medicaid FSSA benefits portal or calling the FSSA at 800-403-0864. You can view a complete guide to logging in and updating information HERE.

Watch your mailbox.

Updating your information, especially your mailing address, with the FSSA is important because they need a way to contact you about your eligibility. You will receive a letter from the FSSA with information about your Medicaid coverage, including if you need to complete a renewal form to see if you still qualify for Medicaid. If you receive this form, fill it out and mail it back as soon as possible so that you do not risk a gap in your coverage.

What if you no longer qualify for Medicaid?

If you no longer qualify for Medicaid coverage, you may be eligible for a health plan through the Marketplace. Several plans offer affordable coverage for office visits, prescription costs, hospital visits and more. Losing your Medicaid coverage is considered a qualifying life event, meaning you do not need to wait for open enrollment to purchase a health plan through the Marketplace.
