“The most wonderful time of the year” is not a true statement for everyone. If you’ve recently lost a loved one, live far away, or been separated from friends and family, it is easy to feel alone during the holidays. Although it can be a tough season, there are some ways to cope with the feeling of loneliness.
Acknowledge your Feelings
The first step is to realize you may feel lonely, and that it is okay to feel this way. Once you’ve acknowledge these feelings, you can work on ways to cope.
Volunteer
The holiday season is a perfect time to volunteer and give back in your community. Donating to a food bank, serving at a soup kitchen, or providing gifts to those in need can bring a sense of connection and fulfillment.
Attend a Local Event
Most communities have an event during this time of year. Having something to look forward to can add some joy to this season.
Reach Out to Others
A phone call, text message, or letter can go a long way! Staying connected to others and not isolating yourself can combat feelings of loneliness. Making plans with those nearby is another way to feel a little less lonely.
Practice Self-Care
Prioritize taking care of yourself. Keeping a gratitude journal, making your favorite food, exercising, watching your favorite holiday movies, or even creating your own tradition can help boost your mood!
Loneliness can feel heavier during the holidays, but it doesn’t have to be a defining factor. Whether you connect with others, start a new tradition, or simply rest, know that your feelings matter and you are not alone. We wish you peace and comfort this holiday season.
